Chapter 1

Chapter 1: The Beginning

The rebar was heavy. Ethan’s shoulders burned. Not the good kind. The quitting kind.

The sun beat down. Concrete dust coated everything. He tasted grit.

"Carter! Move it!"

Big Mike’s voice. Always yelling. Mike didn't understand. Ethan wasn't lazy. Just... tired. Always tired.

He gripped the rough metal. Lifted. A sharp pain. Not from the bar. Deeper.

Inside his head.

A sudden, blinding flash. Red. Orange. It wasn't the sun.

He dropped the rebar. It clanged loud. Too loud.

"What the hell, Carter?" Mike stomped toward him.

Ethan swayed. The world tilted. The heat intensified. Not the sun anymore. Something else.

A roar.

It ripped through his skull. Not a human sound. Not a machine. Ancient. Primal.

He clutched his head. His fingers dug into his temples.

"You high, kid?" Mike’s face was a blur.

"No," Ethan choked out. "No, I'm... I don't know."

The roar pulsed. It echoed in his bones. His teeth vibrated.

He squeezed his eyes shut. Saw scales. Impossible. Gleaming. Dark.

A wave of nausea hit him. He stumbled back. Tripped over a loose pipe.

His ass hit the scorching concrete. Pain. But the roar was louder.

Heat. Spreading. From inside.

His skin felt too tight. Like it would split.

"Get up, you idiot! We got a deadline!" Mike kicked the rebar.

Ethan gasped. Air burned in his lungs.

His right arm. It was tingling. A strange, deep vibration.

He looked down. His forearm. Nothing. Plain skin. But it felt... wrong.

Like something was under it. Moving.

"You sick? You look like you seen a ghost," Mike said. His tone shifted. Less angry. More suspicious.

Ethan tried to stand. His legs were jelly.

The tingling became a throb. A deep, persistent ache.

He couldn't focus. The world wavered.

"Just... just got a headache," he mumbled. He tried to hide his arm.

Mike squinted at him. "Headache, huh? Or you on something, Carter? I told you, no junkies on my site."

"I'm not," Ethan protested. The word felt like sandpaper.

The throbbing in his arm intensified. It felt hot now. Really hot.

Beneath the skin. Something pushed. A faint, hard ridge.

He yanked his sleeve down. Pulled it tight.

"What are you doing?" Mike took a step closer.

Ethan backed away. Scrambled to his feet.

His arm. It was burning. Like a brand.

He could *feel* it. A shape. Forming. Under his flesh.

"I need a break," he said. His voice was too high. Too thin.

"A break? You just started! You think this is a vacation?" Mike’s face reddened.

The roar came again. Fainter now. More like an echo. But the heat in his arm was undeniable.

It felt like fire. Trapped. Inside him.

He pressed his other hand to his forearm. Felt the heat through his shirt. And the ridge. It was harder now. More defined.

"I'm not feeling well," he insisted. He tried to walk away.

His movements were jerky. Disjointed.

The thing under his skin pushed harder. A sharp, searing pain.

He cried out. A small, involuntary sound.

Mike grabbed his shoulder. "Hey! Where do you think you're going?"

Ethan flinched. The touch sent a jolt of fresh pain through his arm.

He ripped his shoulder away.

"Don't touch me!" he yelled. He didn't mean to. It just came out.

Mike stared. His eyes narrowed. "Alright, that's it. You're done. You're fired."

The words barely registered. Ethan was focused on his arm.

The skin stretched. A thin, almost translucent membrane.

He could see it. Just beneath the surface. A dark, scales-like pattern.

It pulsed. Faintly. With an internal light.

No. No, this wasn't happening.

He squeezed his eyes shut. Took a deep breath. Opened them again.

The pattern was still there. Sharper now. Defined.

He felt a primal terror. This wasn't a headache. This wasn't heatstroke.

"Fired?" he whispered.

"Yeah, fired! Get off my site before I call the cops!" Mike pointed a thick finger at the gate.

Ethan didn't move. He couldn't. His arm was screaming.

The scales. They were black. Obsidian. Gleaming.

He could feel the individual plates. Forming. Within his own flesh.

A gasp escaped his lips. He stumbled back further.

Mike watched him. His face a mask of disgust. "What are you looking at, junkie? Your arm? Got some track marks you don't want me to see?"

Ethan didn't answer. He was staring at his forearm.

The skin was almost transparent now. The scales were undeniable.

And then, a tiny, almost imperceptible tremor.

The scales shifted. Beneath the surface.

A low hiss. Not from his mouth. From his arm.

His eyes widened. He slapped his other hand over it. Hard.

Tried to push it back. To make it disappear.

It didn't.

The hiss grew louder. A faint, raspy sound.

Mike took another step. "What the hell was that?"

Ethan shook his head. Desperate. "Nothing. Just... just my stomach."

He was lying. Mike knew it. Ethan knew it.

His arm throbbed. The scales pushed harder.

He could feel a sharp point. A small, curved protrusion.

Trying to break through.

No. This was impossible.

He backed away. Step by agonizing step.

Mike was confused. Angry. "You think I'm stupid? You think I can't see you're acting like a lunatic?"

Ethan kept backing up. His eyes fixed on his arm.

The skin stretched further. Thinner.

The point. It was breaking through.

A tiny bead of blood. Dark. Almost black.

It welled up. On the surface of his skin.

Mike was yelling now. "Hey! I'm talking to you, Carter! Turn around!"

Ethan ignored him. He was watching the blood.

And the object. The small, sharp, black thing.

It wasn't a splinter. It wasn't a cut.

It was... part of him. Emerging.

A scale.

Small. Perfect. Black.

It breached the skin. Just a tiny corner.

He could feel the air against it. Cold. Alien.

A sharp, searing pain tore through his arm.

He cried out. A choked, strangled sound.

Mike was right behind him. Too close.

"What is that?" Mike's voice was low now. Confused. Horrified.

Ethan turned. His eyes wide. Terrified.

He stared at Mike. Mike stared at his arm.

The scale. It was fully out now. A small, black diamond.

Attached to his flesh. Growing.

Mike’s face went pale. His jaw slackened.

He looked at Ethan. Then at the arm. Then back at Ethan.

"What... what did you do?" Mike stammered. His voice was a whisper.

Ethan couldn't speak. He could only stare at the black scale on his arm.

And the impossible heat radiating from it.

It flared. A tiny spark of inner fire.

Mike stumbled back. "Oh my god. What is that?"

The scale grew. Faster now. Other scales pushed around it.

His forearm was transforming. Rapidly.

Ethan felt a scream building in his throat.

Mike turned to run.

"Wait!" Ethan yelled.

The scales were spreading. Up his arm. Like a dark, living tattoo.

Mike stopped. He looked back. His eyes were wide with fear.

"What is happening to me?" Ethan pleaded. His voice broke.

The skin tore. Not painfully, but with a wet, ripping sound.

More scales emerged. Black. Gleaming. Hard.

Mike let out a strangled cry. He pointed.

"Your... your arm!" he screamed.

Ethan looked down. The black scales were climbing. Past his elbow.

The heat was unbearable. He could hear the hiss. Louder now.

His forearm was covered. Completely.

Black. Impenetrable.

And it was still spreading. Up his bicep.

Mike was backing away. Faster now. Tripping over himself.

"Monster!" Mike shrieked. "You're a monster!"

Ethan felt a jolt. Not of pain. Of recognition.

The roar. The scales. The heat.

It wasn't a sickness. It wasn't drugs.

It was... something else. Something ancient.

His arm was completely transformed. Solid black. Scaled.

It felt incredibly heavy. Incredibly powerful.

Mike was gone. Running. Screaming.

Ethan was alone. On the dusty construction site.

His arm glowed faintly. A dark, internal fire.

And he knew. With a terrifying certainty.

This was not a nightmare.

This was real.

And it was just beginning.

He looked at his hand. His fingers.

They were changing too. Elongating. Skin hardening.

A sharp, unbearable itching on his back. Between his shoulder blades.

Mike’s screams faded.

Ethan was on his knees. His entire arm was alien.

The itching on his back intensified. A tearing sensation.

He heard a low growl. Not from his throat.

From within his own body.

His vision blurred. The world spun.

He felt another sharp, agonizing push. On his back.

Something was tearing through.

He thrashed. Tried to look.

The pain was immense. But intertwined with it, a strange, terrible power.

He saw the foreman’s truck. Speeding off.

He was alone.

The tearing sensation on his back grew. Wet. Horrible.

And then, a new kind of pain.

His skin. It was splitting.
